What it’s like as an Admin Assistant Intern at ACS Foundation?

Updated: Aug 28

At its core, the ACS Foundation is an organisation centered on students. Engaging students in the screening and selection process is an excellent way to connect with them and evaluate their suitability for work placements. Thus, the ACS Foundation involves students in the assessment process. In 2024, we have two interns, Hayat and Alya, who provide administrative assistance in the peer review process. We take immense pride in their contributions and are thrilled to showcase how they assist their peers in acquiring work experience and employment within the Australian technology sector.

My name is Hayat, and I am an Administrative Assistant Intern at the ACS Foundation. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Marketing and Consumer Insights, and Bachelor of Psychology at Macquarie University. My internship began in November 2023 where I quickly learned the recruitment process of internships and scholarships. This internship marks the first step in my professional career, and I am continuously learning new skills every day.

During my internship, I have advertised multiple roles on the ACS Foundation, reviewed high volumes of applicants, organized interviews and created employment contracts. This has given me the opportunity to enhance my administrative skills, organization and attention to detail skills, crucial in every career. While this internship has been crucial for my personal growth, it has also been incredibly rewarding to be part of an applicant’s journey to employment. From receiving their application, conducting phone screenings, sending interview invitations, and finally, extending job offers, each step has been fulfilling.

This internship has allowed me to understand recruiters’ perspectives when choosing the right applicants, including reviewing applicants’ resumes and cover letters. I have learned the key elements that make an application standout such as, clear, and concise resume, relevant experience and tailoring the application to match the job description.

So far, my internship has allowed me to gain, develop and strengthen my skills which are crucial in my future endeavors. I've even had the opportunity to contribute to ACS Foundation promotional materials such as writing blogs to help students in their job search. I look forward to completing the next 3 months of my internship and continuing to grow both personally and professionally.

My name is Alya and I began working at the ACS Foundation in April of 2023 while I was a final year student studying

Human Resource Management at university. I started by learning the recruitment process which involved advertising roles, looking at resumes, contacting students, and conducting reference checks. It’s been great being able to help students and graduates find the roles they need to further their career and build professional skills.

Since then, I’ve worked on other, exciting projects such as helping as a student volunteer at the Big Day In Junior where year 5 and 6 students participate in hands-on workshops to encourage them to study STEM subjects in high school. In December 2023, I began helping with the Women of STEM scholarship which is a scholarship aimed at encouraging young women to study and pursue a career in STEM. As part of the assessment panel, I was involved shortlisting and interviewing candidates. It was incredibly inspiring to speak to such ambitious and accomplished young girls with big dreams in STEM.

I’ve also had the opportunity to co-host the Big Day In at UTS in early 2024 which forced me to step outside of my comfort zone and present to an audience of more than 500 high school students. It was a great experience being able to try my hand at event coordinating and see amazing industry speakers from the tech and IT industry.

In April of 2024, I was approaching the end of my contract and the end of my studies. I have been lucky enough to be offered to stay at the ACS Foundation full time and I am now able to continue helping students and graduates find exciting employment opportunities in the Australian Tech and IT industry.

The ACS Foundation is always looking for more interns, both to help us and to help our clients. If you would like to gain paid work experience in the IT industry and set yourself up for a lucrative career in technology, then contact us to express your internship interest.
