How One Family Discovered Hybrid Working

The Covid pandemic brought significant changes to the world, including the acceleration important workplace initiatives. Before 2020, remote work was less common in Australia's technology sector. However, when restrictions were mandated across the country, companies were forced to transition to remote work to ensure business continuity.

As the situation improved, remote work evolved into a 'hybrid model' that combines working from home and the office. Many employees preferred this hybrid approach over a full-time return to the office, leading employers to recognize the benefits of increased productivity and improved staff morale.

Previously, discussions about remote work between employers and employees were challenging due to perceived lack of trust and the absence of clear policies. Ironically, the Covid pandemic facilitated constructive conversations within organizations, paving the way for the hybrid work model.

While some roles must be performed physically, small and medium businesses discovered that tailoring remote work options to some individual roles and circumstances could enhance morale, recruitment, and retention, especially in a competitive job market. Even large corporations, facing challenges with office leases, realized the appeal of the hybrid model to retain key talent.

The Price family found that several members had to work remotely at the same time. However, their workplace practices have since evolved, and they have now established a rhythm of hybrid working.

Rob Price, Commercial Head at Fresh Clinics, shared how the transition to remote work significantly changed his daily routine and emphasized the importance of maintaining a people-focused approach through virtual meetings. Rob highlighted the benefits of the hybrid model, especially in maintaining social connections, fostering trust, and enhancing team collaboration. He expressed that while remote work can be productive, in-person interactions are essential for sustained success.

Josalyn Price, Head of Commercial and Operations at Cybake in Australia, emphasized the importance of supporting staff for successful remote work arrangements. She highlighted the benefits of a hybrid working model in terms of productivity, recruitment, and team flexibility.

Beyond the Prices, Georgie Wilson, a Marketing lead in tech-driven advertising, discussed the productivity advantages of being in the office, particularly for client-facing roles. She noted the value of observing and learning from colleagues in an office environment.

From an industry perspective, John Ridge, Executive Director of ACS Foundation said,

"The acceptance of the hybrid model within organizations allows a variety of approaches to remote work based on the role requirements and can be used to positively influence company culture."

In conclusion, the Covid pandemic has reshaped workplace dynamics, leading to the widespread adoption of the hybrid work model. Organizations have embraced connective technology to support remote and in-person collaboration, recognizing the importance of regular team interactions for sustainable productivity and morale. The hybrid model has quickly evolved and is likely to remain a key aspect of modern workplaces.
